Huetares

It was the most important group in Costa Rica. They were also called Guetares or Pacacuas. It was the most organized and powerful indigenous nation in Costa Rica upon the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. They had several kingdoms: that of Garabito from Grande de Tarcoles, to the virilla river and central Volcanic Cordillera; The kingdom of Pacaca: Cantón de Mora and el Guarco, Cartago to Plains of the Central Caribbean and Chirripó. They worked on stones as metates; sculptures; ceremonial tables and altars, the Huetar and Chibcha language was spoken in Costa Rica, but it is extinct and due to its proximity to the capital, much of its culture: language, gastronomy and beliefs. has been lost. There is still a small group of 1000 individuals located in the highlands of the Quitirrisí Reserve, between the Canton of Mora and Puriscal. The other settlement is Zapatón. They still preserve much of their crafts, they make textiles, they know medicinal plants and a good gastronomy.
